Control of track lights, fluorescent lights and LED strips

    This article will consider the control of track, fluorescent lamps and LED strips using the SE6i5o Light relay module, which has output relays designed for loads of 220V, 16A, with starting currents of no more than 70A. The listed types of luminaires have significant inrush currents, which can be several times higher than those stated in the documentation. It is not possible to control such loads directly using the module's built-in relays. If you ignore this rule, the relays will quickly fail — they will "stick" when switched on.

    The correct solution would be to use the SE 6i5o Pro or SE 6i5o Ultra modules, which allow inrush currents up to 120 and 492A, respectively, but let's assume that the Light modules are already installed or the types of fixtures have changed at the last moment.  In this case, the power supply to the luminaires should be carried out through power relays or inrush current limiters. Let's describe both of these options with their advantages and disadvantages.

    It is better to choose the option with a power relay when you need to control a powerful load or the type of load is not known at all. In our projects, we use relays to control the lighting of retail halls, conference rooms, or the lighting of a private house. The advantage with respect to inrush current limiters is the ability to install relays with any switching current and, as a result, the ability to connect loads of any power. The disadvantages include noise — the sound produced when the relay is turned on/off in an "open field" will be heard from 20-30 meters. Installing the relay in a good cabinet with a door saves the situation a bit, but it's not always enough.

    If the loads are not large (up to 8A) and you want to avoid any loud noises, choose inrush current limiters. We mostly install them in apartments, because they work quietly and are 2-3 times cheaper than power relays. It should be noted that the connection scheme for inrush current limiters is much simpler than relays.
